The 11th Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) highlights the best in African cinema. Organised by MultiChoice and Africa Magic, the event honours excellence in film and television.

This year’s nominations showcase compelling storytelling and strong performances across different genres. The AMVCA continues to celebrate African cinema, recognising films that tell unique stories.

Each of these films brings a distinct perspective, shaping the future of storytelling on the continent.

Seven Doors – 11 Nominations

Seven Doors leads this year’s nominations. The film explores themes of kingship, family, and tradition. Femi Adebayo plays King Adedunjoye, a leader whose duty clashes with personal struggles. Chioma Akpotha portrays his queen, bringing depth to their journey. The film’s recognition spans acting, directing, sound design, and art direction.

Lisabi: The Uprising – 10 Nominations

Set in the 18th century, Lisabi: The Uprising tells the story of Lisabi, a warrior who led the Egba people against the Oyo Empire. Adebimpe Oyebade Adedimeji and Victoria Akujobi produced the film, with Niyi Akinmolayan directing. Lateef Adedimeji plays Lisabi, while Ibrahim Chatta takes on the role of a ruthless tax collector. The historical setting adds depth to the film’s visual and narrative appeal.

Skeleton Coast – 8 Nominations

Skeleton Coast brings together actors from Nigeria, South Africa, Ghana, and Namibia. Directed by Robert O. Peters, the film follows Black African scientists searching for the mythical Blunamite gem. The journey leads to unexpected discoveries. Thapelo Mokoena, Ini Dima-Okojie, and Mawuli Gavor deliver strong performances, with Hollywood’s Eric Roberts also appearing in the film.

Christmas in Lagos – 6 Nominations

Jade Osiberu’s Christmas in Lagos captures the complexities of relationships during the festive season. Fiyin, played by Teniola Aladese, struggles with heartbreak while navigating friendship and love. Shalom Obiago, Rayxia Ojo, and Shaffy Bello bring their characters to life. The film blends romance, self-discovery, and music, featuring Afrobeats stars Waje, Adekunle Gold, and Ayra Starr.

Inkabi – 6 Nominations

Inkabi follows Frank, a retired hitman turned taxi driver, and Lucy, a woman caught in a dangerous situation. Directed by Norman Maake, the film explores loyalty and survival. Tshamano Sebe plays Frank, while Michelle Tiren portrays Lucy. The film’s cinematography and storytelling secure its place among this year’s top contenders.

Freedom Way – 5 Nominations

Afolabi Olalekan’s directorial debut, Freedom Way, tells the story of a startup facing regulatory and police challenges. The film follows nine individuals whose lives intersect in a tense environment. Debo Adedayo, Meg Otanwa, and Akin Lewis bring authenticity to their roles. The narrative highlights the realities of young entrepreneurs.

House of Ga’a – 5 Nominations

House of Ga’a takes viewers back to the 18th-century Oyo Empire. Directed by Bolanle Austen-Peters, the film follows Bashorun Ga’a, a leader driven by power. Femi Branch plays the lead role, supported by Mike Afolarin, Funke Akindele, and Ibrahim Chatta. The film explores ambition, leadership, and consequences.
