The Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) is not only a celebration of African storytelling but a reminder of the power of performances that leave a lasting mark. Each year, the event gathers talents who turn scripts into memories and roles into echoes that stay long after the credits roll.
At the 11th AMVCA, the Best Lead Actor category stands out. It brings together performances shaped by history, identity, pride, loss, and survival. These nominees have not only carried their characters but lived through them, offering audiences something raw and unforgettable.
Here is a closer look at the nominees for Best Lead Actor at AMVCA2025:
Gideon Okeke – Tokunbo
In Tokunbo, Gideon Okeke steps into the life of Tòkunbọ̀, an ex-car smuggler desperate to rebuild his life. Tòkunbọ̀’s journey is one of urgency, as he struggles to pay for his sick child’s medical treatment. His world becomes a race against time when he accepts a risky job to secure his family’s future.
Speaking about the role, Gideon describes Tòkunbọ̀ as “fast-paced with a pulse.” He connects with the character’s struggle, drawing from personal experiences. “The guy was going through it, and I had my own fair share of it too. So it was easy to connect with something I was dealing with or something he was dealing with,” he says. His portrayal captures a man walking a fragile line between desperation and hope.
Bucci Franklin – The Weekend
Bucci Franklin portrays Luke Chezeta, a man trying to balance love with the weight of a painful past. In The Weekend, Luke’s fiancée, Nikya, urges him to reconnect with the family he abandoned years ago. Driven by her longing for family ties, they travel back to Kwasa.
There, Nikya discovers layers of Luke’s past hidden behind the walls he built. As the weekend unfolds, secrets surface, forcing Nikya to question whether family is truly worth the price. Luke’s internal conflict remains at the heart of the story, and Bucci brings that tension to life.
Femi Branch – House of Ga’a
In House of Ga’a, Femi Branch brings to life Bashorun Ga’a, a figure whose rise to power shapes the fate of the Oyo Empire. The story follows Ga’a from a warrior’s victories to a reign defined by rebellion and manipulation.
After securing a crucial military victory, Ga’a claims power, defying the king and controlling the throne through violence and political games. His story, built on ambition and resentment, ends in a kingdom shaped by fear and betrayal. Femi Branch captures Ga’a’s journey through strength, choice, and consequence.
Thapelo Makoena – Skeleton Coast
In Skeleton Coast, Thapelo Makoena plays Lorato, a scientist drawn into a mystery along Namibia’s desolate coastline. Tasked with finding Blunamite, a rare gem, Lorato joins a team that soon faces death and suspicion.
When one of their own dies under unclear circumstances, fear spreads among the group. Suspicion grows. The question of whether the danger comes from within or from the coast itself hangs heavy. Lorato’s search becomes less about discovery and more about survival.
Bimbo Manuel – Princess On A Hill
Bimbo Manuel portrays Moyosore Lawson in Princess On A Hill, a character who uses his position to control those around him. His actions against Zara, an employee drawn into his toxic plans, create ripples that stretch across her relationships and her future.
As Zara struggles to break free, Moyosore’s influence threatens to consume everything in her life. Bimbo brings a calm but chilling weight to the story of power used to break rather than build.
Stan Nze – Suspicion
Stan Nze embodies Voke, a man whose extraordinary powers are both gift and burden. In Suspicion, Voke yearns for a normal life but is forced into conflict when his goddaughter is kidnapped by forces immune to ordinary defence.
Voke’s journey leads him back to the wisdom of his mother, who warns, “You’re my only child; be careful.” Navigating danger, loyalty, and secrets, Stan brings to Voke a deep emotional struggle between duty and fear.
Femi Adebayo – Seven Doors
In Seven Doors, Femi Adebayo portrays Adedunjoye, a man whose peaceful family life is turned upside down when called to ascend the throne of Ilara Kingdom. Torn between duty and love, Adedunjoye faces forces within his own family and beyond.
